5 mistakes in web design

What are the top five mistakes in web design?

1. DIY – Do it yourself is ok if you are an individual who wants to show case a piece of art or tell the world your thoughts but for a business, DIY web sites can send out the wrong message to potential clients.

2. Fonts, fonts, fonts! – Some people make the mistake in thinking that using lots of fonts is appealing to the eye. Generally 1 or 2 fonts (a different font for headings to make them stand out) is a good idea otherwise the page content can get distracted by the design.

3. Tables coding – if you haven't heard of tables there's a good reason. Tables layout for code was an old method to make web sites (by old we mean early 90s) now a days we use tables to hold tabular information only such as a calender or information table. Using tables to code is usually what you get with template web sites, or editors. To break it down, it basically means that your code is twice as long as it need be, making it hard work for those all important search engine robots to index your web site. Along side this, its not accessible to those with screen readers and makes your web site download time much, much longggggggggggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer.

4. Messy layouts – ever visited a web site that begins with a two column layout then moves onto 3, 4, and sometimes the logo and pictures move around. Uniformed web sites are far more pleasing on the eye.

5. Colour me happy – using too many bright colours together can be painful on the eyes let alone for those with colour sighted issues. Use subtle shades with one stronger colour to pull the whole palette together.
